Voting in local elections, or non-presidential federal elections, can be hugely impactful for causes many Americans feel passionately about. In 2020, Florida voted on an amendment that raised the minimum wage, even though the minimum wage has not been raised on a national level. When it comes to issues like climate change, women’s rights, and even voting rights, voting for more than just the presidential candidates is important.
In recent years, voting turnout has been historically low. Only about 15-27% of eligible voters vote in their local elections. People are not voting for a variety of reasons[CS1] . Many cite lack of information and education on voting, not knowing where or how to register to vote, or difficulty getting to their polling place. Many also believe their vote is not impactful. This low turnout likely does not represent the income, age, and ethnicity of each community, which can be a big problem when it comes to policy.
It’s also important to understand who each candidate is and what their position would entail. Local government positions, or those that are less often discussed than president, senator, or representative, can make a big difference in a community. Before heading to the polls, make sure to research who’s on your ballot and what each candidate plans to do if elected.
Showing up to the polls ensures that your community has a voice, and signals to policymakers that you’re willing to make that voice heard. According to massvote.org, “If your community is turning out well below other neighborhoods, elected officials will pay less attention, make fewer appearances, and fewer appeals to your neighborhoods. Who votes has a powerful impact on public policy and government.”
There are still barriers that make it difficult for every citizen to vote. In the United States, voting day is not considered a federal holiday and voters are not guaranteed the day off from work to exercise their right. Gerrymandering and voter suppression have also been hot topics over the last few years when it comes to voting rights and who is ultimately able to vote. Therefore, it is especially important to vote to help fight against voter suppression and to help elect officials who are committed to ensuring the right to vote for everyone.
